If you’ve never been to an Ag PhD workshop, it’s definitely better than Ag PhD TV, as Brian and Darren won’t hold back on talking about which products and practices will work on your farm, but more importantly, which ones won’t. Here are some of the topics and questions they’ll cover during each workshop:

New herbicides/fungicides/insecticides – In the last 3 years we’ve seen a huge amount of new products, but which ones are the best? Which ones are the worst? When are the right and wrong times to spray?

2008 Yield results from the Hefty farm and other farms across the region – Which agronomic practices are paying and which ones aren’t? You’ll learn more about bug problems, diseases, herbicides, biological products, and more.

Tiling – We bought our own tile plow a year ago, and have since put in over 30 miles of tile ourselves. We’ll talk about some of the advantages and pitfalls as well as how you CAN get tiling done in your area, even though many people say you can’t. Installing tile may be a little work, but it’s another job that pays WAY more than $100 an hour if you do it yourself.

Israel – Brian and Darren took a trip to Israel this year. How do farmers thrive in a country full of machine guns, terrorists, and desert conditions? You’ll find out.

When will P & K be worth using again? – You probably already know that you can’t afford to apply P & K to corn, soybeans, or wheat with today’s commodity prices, but at what point will investing in P & K pay again? What will happen to your crop when you continue to apply less plant food than the crop removes? By the time you leave this workshop, you’ll know how to sample and read soil tests, how to sample and read plant tissue tests, how many nutrients your crops actually need, and which nutrients should
give you the best return on investment on YOUR FARM. Things have dramatically changed since even last year, so we’ve got lots of new information for you for 2009.

We know your schedule is busy, but at our agronomy meetings we guarantee you will learn enough about agronomy to improve your bottom line in 2009 and for years to come. We often talk about finding jobs on the farm that pay you $100 an hour. Without a doubt, attending any of our agronomy workshops WILL make you an extra $500, if not $5000 on your farm in the future. Whether you do your business at Hefty Seed Company or not, please join us! This year’s workshops are free, and just for attending you will receive a free agronomy manual.

Jim’s presentations are always entertaining, insightful, and sure to leave you talking about his advice for weeks to come. You’ll learn about his expectations for commodity prices in 2009, how foreign countries are affecting our markets, and the impact weather, supply, and changing acres will have down the road. It will be an event you won’t soon forget.
Brian and Darren will also cover most of the same topics as our regular Winter Workshops (see above).

Wheat Seminars
10 am to 3:00 pm
with Tom Johnson & Brian and Darren

Thursday, January 22, 2009
Mitchell, SD
Mitchell Tech - with Bayer

Monday, February 23, 2009
Pierre, SD
Ramkota - with Dow

Learn what’s new in wheat for 2009. Brian and Darren will talk about things you can do to COST EFFECTIVELY make your wheat crop better, including how to properly fertilize wheat, how many nutrients a wheat crop actually removes, and which input investments probably WON’T pay on your farm. There will also
be some time spent on micronutrients, fungi, and bacteria that are beneficial in wheat with Tom Johnson from TJ Technologies.

Depending on which seminar you attend, Bayer or Dow will also be there to talk about their newer wheat products, too.

10 am to 3 pm – with a noon meal and free agronomy handouts.
