I love HPPDs… Callisto (mesotrione) and the other name-brand products, as well as the generics, are very, very inexpensive. If you throw even a quarter pound of atrazine with them, they all work better due to the proven synergy between those chemistries. Add Roundup to the mix and you’ve got a great post-emerge weed-killing combo for not much more than $5 per acre.
If you want to talk about a great return on investment, this program is it! unless…
A. You have waterhemp or other weeds resistant or at least tolerant to the HPPDs.
B. You are having carryover issues.
What I’m saying here is be careful with your use rates and your rotation to avoid carryover problems and always be on the lookout for weeds that aren’t dying after a herbicide application. In 2025, for example, we saw hundreds of thousands of acres where generic mesotrione did NOT kill all the waterhemp.
